Samsung Heavy Ind. (SHI) Received Ten LNG-Fueled Crude Oil Tankers Order

South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries(SHI)  has received orders to build ten A-max LNG-fueled crude oil tankers for an Oceanian shipowner.

According to a stock exchange filing, the deal is valued at KRW 751.3 billion (USD 620.2 million), or KRW 75.1 million per unit.

The 113,000 dwt dual-fueled tankers would be delivered in a consecutive order to the unnamed buyer by the end of January 2022.

Samsung Heavy has achieved 54% of its USD 7.8 billion annual target so far this year by securing USD 4.2 billion worth of contracts. The shipbuilding deals have been signed for 29 vessels, that include 14 crude oil tankers and 11 LNG carriers.

Just last week, Samsung Heavy unveiled its latest LNG carrier order, with a value of KRW 225.5 billion (USD 185.8 million. The deal, signed with an undisclosed Asian customer, would see the shipbuilder construct and deliver the unit by late October 2021.

Qatar is planning to order 60 new LNG carriers, Qatar’s energy minister Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said during a Korea-Qatar summit, according to a Reuters report.

The report cited Sung Leep Jung, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering CEO as saying that most of the current Qatari LNG fleet was built by the three major shipyards in South Korea.

South Korean shipyards are expecting the majority of the orders for new LNG carriers, it said.

The plans to order new vessels follows Qatar’s plans to expand its production capacity from the current 77 million tonnes per annum to 110 mtpa, a 43 percent increase. Qatar aims to add four new liquefaction trains that will produce about 32 mtpa of LNG, 4,000 tons/day of ethane, 260,000 barrels/day of condensate, and 11,000 tons/day of LPG, in addition to approximately 20 tons per day of pure helium.
