Spotify patents tech that will allow the platform to analyze the mood of an individual to customize suggestions and playlists. The company recently revealed that it has patented this technology that will potently gauge the voice variations and suggest songs on the basis of the listener’s “emotional state, gender, age, and accent.”
Patenting this Coveted Tech
The request for the patent rights to this innovative tech was filed by the renowned music streaming platform in 2018. It has been finally granted in 2021. The crux of the algorithm is based on the ‘observation of the user’s environment’ and emotions will the implementation of the speech recognition tech. Thus, the app will be able to play tailored music according to the mood or setting of the user’s environment. For instance the app will detect whether the user is alone, or in a group settings to customize suggestions.
The patent suggests that speech recognition could be used to gather information about age and gender, while contextual cues such as “intonation, stress, and rhythm” would provide clues as to whether a user was “happy, angry, sad or neutral”. These results will be combined with other informational categories to improve recommendations. This will include, the user’s previous song selections as well as their friends’ music choices. The technology is one of several technical innovations that Spotify has patented over the last year.
A Drive to Innovate
The music streaming giant has invested considerable time and energy in developing ways of customizing playlists for its users. Last year, Spotify conducted a study on how the personality traits of users affect their music preferences. Spotify’s Research and Development Team concluded that “those who scored high in conscientiousness tended to concentrate their listening to a more narrow window of time of day,” With the onset of the New Year, the platform has already secured a host of patents. Earlier this week, it gained permission for a “cadence-based media content selection engine” – which matches the tempo of your music to your running speed. Spotify also patented a Karaoke-like feature that allowed users to “overlay a music track with their own vocals”. With a global user base of 320 million, the platform is constantly innovating to create technologically adept modalities to promote content – including music, podcasts and advertising –ensuring that its users’ experience remains premium.
