Oscar 2021 to be produced by a Veteran Trio

One of the most memorable Oscar ceremonies will be produced by a collaborating trio of industry veterans. David Rubin, Academy President announced that the two-time Oscar nominated producer Stacey Sher, Emmy nominee Jesse Collins, and Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh will be jointly producing the 93rd Oscars, slated to be held on 25rd April, 2021, on ABC.

Celebrated Filmmakers

Incidentally, Steven Soderbergh is also the producer of the much discussed 2011 pandemic drama ‘Contagion’, which saw a revival in viewership and acute discussions on its plot during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. He is also known for producing hits like ‘Magic Mike’, ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ and others. He bagged his first Oscar in 2001 for directing the film ‘Traffic’. Stacey Sher has earned her Oscar nomination for producing the 2012 hit ‘Django Unchained’ and Soderbergh’s ‘Erin Brockovich’ (2000). Collins has earned considerable praise for his work. He was praised at the 2019 Emmy Awards for his production of the Grammys, the BET Awards, and the Soul Train Awards. He is also set to produce the Super Bowl halftime next time. In a joint statement the collaborating trio expressed their excitement stating, “We’re both thrilled and terrified in equal measures”. They also added, “because of the extraordinary situation we’re all in, there’s an opportunity to focus on the movies and the people who make them in a new way, and we hope to create a show that really feels like the movies we all love.”

New Possibilities

The ongoing covid-19 pandemic has forced the academy to delay the Oscar ceremony next year. April has been selected as the month for the ceremony. The submission and consideration period have also been extended to include motion pictures released until early next year. Reports also suggested that the event would not be a virtual one. The Academy was looking forward to an in-person event. However, no such confirmation has been issued by the Academy. Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson, in a joint press statement propounded that the upcoming telecast was the “perfect occasion for innovation and for re-envisioning the possibilities” of the existent award show formats.
