Netflix Direct The Answer to Our Perpetual Content Selection Dilemma

According to a report in the Variety magazine, Netflix is testing a novel feature to add to its basket of offerings. The OTT giant plans to launch a new feature titled Netflix Direct that will enable users to get an experience very much similar to that of traditionally flipping through television channels. The report stated that Netflix was in the testing phase with tests currently being conducted in France.

What is Netflix Direct?

Netflix Direct is a feature designed to operate in close semblance to conventional TV channel streaming. It will be the OTT giant’s first attempt at linear, scheduled programming. The rationale for a phased testing of this novel feature in France was that according to studies the traditional modalities of television content consumption are still quite popular among the French audience. The feature will be available throughout France by December 2020. If these tests prove to be successful, Netflix will soon roll out this novel feature in the rest of it vast global market.

Why is it Perfect?

Netflix Direct is especially curated for people who may not want to sit for hours, simply flipping through the myriad variety of content offered by the OTT platform. This feature brings back the charm of old television with pre-scheduled shows and movies that can be simply accessed by the user, without having to sift through hours of indecisiveness. For the uncertain user, who suffers for hours trying to figure out what to watch, Netflix Direct is a definite boon.

Perpetual Novelty

The key for the success of Netflix Direct is in the curation of the right content. The correct mix of shows, movies and specials needed to be lined up for the scheduled viewing. The market-specific curation of content for now is centered around the French audience’s preferences and includes French, international and US shows and movies. This is not the only new feature being tested by the OTT giant. According to reports, Netflix is also testing its premium service for select users among Indians through ‘weekend trials’. Netflix is also working toward improving the sound quality of its original content and is now producing originals in 4K Dolby Vision that is compatible with most HDR TVs.
