Snail Mucin: Can One Utilize as a Skin Care Product?

For the Korean Skincare Industry, snail mucin is a star ingredient and has been a popular ingredient for a long time and due to social media it has gained its prominence globally.

A 2013 study published in the US National Library of Medicine found that using a serum with about 40% snail mucin for 12 weeks minimized the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Snail mucin, also known as snail secretion filtrate or snail slime, is a sticky substance produced by snails. But the gel-like substance is used in skincare products for its potential benefits for the skin, says dermatologist and cosmetologist Dr Kisalay Saurav.

The potential benefits from snail mucin according to the study are:

  • Moisturizes skin
  • Helps in skin repair
  • Helps in scar reduction
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Good for anti-ageing

Although snail mucin can be beneficial for many, it might not be suitable for all. Some might have an allergy thus it is recommended to perform a patch test before using the product.

Snail mucin is typically found in various skin care products, including serums, creams and masks. It can be applied to the skin as a part of your regular skin care routine. The frequency of snail mucin use depends on the product and your skin’s individual needs. Many people use snail mucin-containing products, especially serums and moisturizer’s, daily without issues, says the expert. One needs to observe how your skin responds to the ingredient. If you notice any adverse reactions, consider reducing the frequency of use or discontinuing the product.

People with very sensitive skin should also be cautious, as some products with snail mucin may contain other ingredients that can trigger skin irritation, says the expert.
