British Retail Consortium (BRC) Drafted New Guidelines for “Vegan”

UK –– British Retail Consortium (BRC) recently released new guidelines have been set out by the retail business to ensure that vegan fashions are really 100% free of animal products. The BRC drafted the new rules which only allow items those reached to the fashion buyers through organization in search of vegan products for the first time to be labeled as “vegan” if all materials used, including dyes, glues, and waxes, do not contain animal products. Also, Vegan-labelled items should provide an alternative to the things which is traditionally made with animal products.

Additionally, the BRC’s new guidelines forbid retailers from claiming a product is sustainable based solely on the fact that it is vegan. The guidelines come at a time when there is a rising demand for vegan fashion from retailers ranging from specialist independent labels to Topshop, New Look, and Marks & Spencer. However, the fashion industry is lagging behind supermarkets where one in five of all new products launched last year were vegan.

The BRC warns retailers they should not claim a product is sustainable just because it is vegan.

A sustainability policy adviser at the BRC Leah Riley Brown said, “If retailers followed the guidelines to the letter, shoppers could be 100% confident that the products they bought were truly vegan”.

The ethical retail market, which spans everything from food and drink to cosmetics, was worth more than £40bn by the end of 2018. However, growing concern about the climate crisis and the role played by fast fashion means attitudes to consumption are changing fast, particularly among young people. One of the study found that more than a third of fashion shoppers would like to spend their money in stores that did not use animal products. Recent example is half of Marks & Spencer’s shoes are now vegan and three of its top 10 bestselling bags this winter were also vegan.
