A Changing World: For the First Time a Woman to Oversee Global Trade

The world trade organisation, which is a 25 year old organisation for the first time will see a woman leading the world trade. The post will be taken up by either Nigerian Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and South Korean Yoo Myung-hee. Out of the numerous candidates eyeing the post, the Geneva based body on Thursday reduced it to these two. Who eventually lands up is yet to be seen but it is going to change history.

The current WTO chief Roberto Azevedo decided to step down a year earlier than his tenure owing to the ugly trade fight between the United States and China in between which WTO was caught.  The WTO is an organisation that was established in the year 1995 to promote smooth trade and benefit for everyone in the world. Having a total of 164 members, it regulates trade and resolves any disputes occurring between its members.

The Nigerian candidate Ngozi Okonio-Iweala has served as a finance minister in Nigeria and is a prominent economist. From the past 25 years she has been working at this organisation and had recently become the organization’s managing director of operations. She was also given the additional responsibility of being a member of the board of twitter in the year 2018. Not only this, she also chairs the board of Gavi. Gavi is an organization who’s primary aim is to bring the public and private sector together in order to improve the access to vaccines.

She tweeted on Thursday “Happy to be in the final round of the WTO campaign. Thanks, WTO members for your continued support of my candidancy.”

The South Korean candidate Yoo Myung-hee is the first woman to have served as South Korea’s trade minister. She exclaimed that in this time of a pandemic the WTO is at crossroads and the economy is in recession, WTO becomes more important than ever.

She tweeted: “Deeply grateful and honoured to be selected for the final round in the selection process for the next WTO director general.”

It remains to be seen who takes the final seat amongst these two strong women.
