A new study that was conducted in Israel now indicates that the Pfizer shot is effective up to 85% after merely receiving one shot. The earlier studies had only indicated that the vaccine will be 95% effective after two doses.
This vaccine has already been granted authorization in many countries of the world and is one of the two vaccines to have received a nod from the United Nation. This vaccine normally has to be taken twice at a gap of twenty-one days for an individual to develop immunity.
Prior to this, the Canadian government had also remarked that people were developing high levels of immunity after receiving one shot. They suggested to increase the gap between the two shots in order to facilitate the vaccination of more people, thereby giving way to more immunity and herd immunity.
As of now, the data related to giving merely one shot of the vaccine is very limited therefore there are huge speculations regarding the same. As more and more governments start rolling out these vaccines to their population, these questions have started to crop up.
Pfizer on the other hand also said that as of now they have not evaluated the single dose regimen and only after thorough research will they be able to say something about the same. They also said that the final decision will be taken by the concerned authorities having in-depth knowledge about the same.
However, one question that has been raised after the study at Israel is that the volunteers in this study were only young individuals, therefore this regimen cannot be administered to everyone.
Currently, almost all the countries in the world have started their vaccination programmes with a number of vaccines that have been made available to the people. the vaccinations are first been given to the health workers and other staff on duty during the days of lockdown. This vaccine has also been studied on the different variants that have started to emerge and has proven to be largely successful against them all.
