The world trade organisation will for the very first time be led by a woman and that too a black one. It is record-breaking and significant in innumerable ways.
Ngozi-Okonjo-Iweala will now be heading the world trade organisation as agreed to by the WTO members.
She is of a Nigerian origin and will be taking over as the new director general of the enormous body. Not only is she the first female to ever take up this task, she is also the first African to do so.
She comes in a time when the world economy is in recession and trade has been limited. A strategy that takes into account the present scenario is extremely vital for the world. All eyes are now on WTO for guidance in the correct direction.
Ngozi has prior to this served as the finance minister for Nigeria and has also worked with the World Bank. She has also been closely associated with all the activities if the world trade organisation and now will be leading it upfront.
The first thing that Ngozi said after her formal taking over was that a strategy needs to be in place, one that will reboot the trade arena.
The 66-year-old economist said that WTO will have to be strong and lead the way to the entire world. she also said that she looks forward to working with all the members of the world trade organisation and put into place a policy that will benefit all the countries and the people.
She said that they need to work towards getting the global economy up and running again.
Ngozi will be taking over office from the 1st of March. Her term is all set to continue till 31st of August 2025, it is also renewable.
Ngozi has not been chosen as the director general just because she’s a woman or an African rather because she has the best of qualifications and is the best suited candidate for this position. Given the current scenario, she has the power to take over this daunting and herculean task on her shoulders and come out with flying colours.
