Maldives has been Crowned as the Most Popular Tourist Destination of 2021

A novel study conducted by Club Med suggests that Maldives will be the most popular tourist destination of 2021. The study analyzed Google search data to distill the results of the list of most desirable travel destinations people want to visit in the upcoming year.

List of the Most Desirable Tourist Destinations by Search Volume

The study showed that exotic travel destinations were the most popular choice among people. Maldives topped the list for most people seeking a holiday away from the tensions of the pandemic. Maldives’ search volume totaled at a whopping 2,960. It was followed by Mexico and Thailand as the second and third most desirably exotic travel destination for 2021. Mexico’s search volume totaled at 2,930, while that of Thailand was at 1,600. The study also divided the data into nationality specific categories. Accordingly, the British populace is eyeing to travel to Turkey, Spain and Malta in the upcoming year. The list of places that topped people’s searches also included Portugal, Mauritius, South Africa and the USA.

Analyzing booking data, the study showed that Italy has also been a fairly popular choice among travelers planning a vacation for the upcoming new year celebrations. According to the data collected, Kamarina in Sicily witnessed an increase of 214% in bookings during September as compared to the same time last year. While Cefalu in Sicily witnessed a far greater increase in bookings, setting the bar at a 350% increase from the previous year.

Pandemic-Induced Travel Escapism

These plans are a result of a year of travel restrictions and prohibitions. People have saved up in order to travel to the more exotic countries of the world as soon as the pandemic-related travel restrictions are relaxed. The study also highlighted other travelling trends that became apparent during the course of this year. People were more interested in traveling to places closer to home during the holidays. This trend witnessed a massive amplification due to obvious travel restrictions. People were forced to explore the travel offerings of their own countries as the rigid travel constraints limited the options of international travel.
