Amazon Becomes Largest Buyer of Clean Energy by Spearheading a Tech Revolution

Amazon announces 26 new utility-scale wind and solar energy projects, increasing its over-all investment in the renewable energy sector to a total of 35 projects in 2020. This project makes Amazon the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy.

Technological Shift

The decision for this technological upgrade is in keeping with the goal of the multinational enterprise to go carbon neutral by 2040. This technological change introduced by the industry giant will power its offices, the Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers as well as its fulfillment centers. Amazon has now invested in 6.5GW of wind and solar projects, allowing it to mark a seminal technological shift. It will now supply its operations with more than 18,000,000MWh of renewable energy annually. By 2030, Amazon plans on powering its entire operation through technological tools driven by 100% renewable energy.

The novel addition of 26 new utility wind and solar projects are located in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Sweden, the UK and the USA. Jeff Bezos, Amazon Founder and CEO was quoted expounding on this important and necessary tech change. He propounded, “Amazon is helping fight climate change by moving quickly to power our businesses with renewable energy. With a total of 127 solar and wind projects, Amazon is now the biggest corporate buyer of renewable energy ever. We are on a path to running 100% of our business on renewable energy by 2025 – five years ahead of our original target of 2030. This is just one of the many steps we’re taking that will help us meet our Climate Pledge. I couldn’t be prouder of all the teams across Amazon that continue to work hard, smart, and fast to get these projects up and running.”

Other Green Technological Initiatives

Amazon also boasts of pioneering the ownership of 68 rooftop solar panels on its various fulfillment and sorting centers around the world. Miranda Ballentine, CEO of Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance (REBA), talked about the significance of this tech change stating, “The US-based projects alone make Amazon’s announcement 270% larger than the largest corporate procurement announcement from a single off-taker to date, and showcase the company’s leadership and commitment to a clean and prosperous energy future.”  The adaptation of such clean technological sources and renewable energy modalities is necessary to combat the currently deteriorating global climatic conditions. It is also significant to note that when a large, multinational player like Amazon adapts such technologies, other companies will soon follow suit.
