The exhibition chronicling the life and legacy of Australian singer, songwriter, composer Nick Cave was inaugurated at the Copenhagen’s Royal Danish Library. The exhibition is entitled ‘Stranger than Kindness’. The now 63 year old artist was the lead singer of the famous band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. He shot to fame because of his coveted baritone voice. He is also known to have featured in plays and authored novels.
Fans of the artist are presented with the rare opportunity to use his coveted piano and typewriter. These memorabilia represent a long career spanning decades and chronicle a life of both achievements and tragic losses. Cave stated that the objects displayed at the exhibition were collected by his now ex-wife, former British model Susie Bick. These were collections made over a span 20 years and stored in containers carefully by her. He enunciated how the idea of an exhibition came together by saying, “There was all this stuff and we started to piece together the idea of an exhibition.”
Life Altering Events
The exhibition tour is quite uniquely designed to replicate his living room, office as well as various stages of his life. Especially touching is the rom dedicated to his 15 year old deceased son, Arthur, who died five years ago due to an accidental fall from a cliff near Brighton. The distinguishing feature of this exhibition room is that it features only a picture of Cave and his wife. The rest of the room is subsumed in total darkness. This metaphorically signifies the loss the couple experienced due to the tragic death of their son. Cave added, “It’s all about creativity, but then this incident occurs and everything changes.” This was the Australian singer’s first public appearance and speech since the incident.
Unforeseen Opportunity
The exhibition will run until February 2021. This exhibition is an excellent opportunity for fans of the artist to get to know his life, work and losses from a much closer viewpoint. They will get to view some of the most intimate details of the artist’s life through this wonderfully conceptualised tour, enabling them to know the person behind the artist. The exhibition will humanise Cave for his loyal fans.
