Aussie Shiraz wins title of best International Wine

History was made when a humble Shiraz that costs a measly $22 from Australia has taken out the massive title of the world’s champion wine. Manufactured by Taylors Wines that is based in South Australia, the company took out the International Champion 2022 award at the prestigious VINUS International Wine & Spirits Competition for their 2020 Shiraz.

The varietal has an interesting combination of Clare Valley and Limestone Coast Fruit. It smells like dark plum and cherry fruits, and is mixed with a slight chocolate and oak spice.

The Taylors Estate Shiraz 2020 is available in various places; Liquorland and BWS in Australia are two such places, where the price of the Shiraz is just $22.

But the story does not end there – the Clare Valley winery also took out another series of awards and special prizes at the competition. It was crowned White Wine Champion for its St Andrews Chardonnay 2021 and Best Australian Wine for the Estate Shiraz 2020.

VENUS was founded in 2015 and is held annually in Argentina. Mitchell Taylor, Taylors Wines third generation winemaker and managing director, expressed his joy and excitement upon receiving the award, calling it a special day. “It is a special day at the winery when we receive news about an international trophy win, but to receive not one but three major prizes – now that is something else,” he said.

“We are particularly excited that our Estate Shiraz was recognised as the wine of show against entrants coming from all over the world. This is a wine that we have produced since our very first vintage in the early 70s.”

Mitchell also praised his winemaking team along with the wine. He stated, “We’re proud of the reputation of our Estate Shiraz. It is one of the top value-for-money wines in Australia. This award is a testament to our winemaking team and their ability to produce a wine that has been loved worldwide for more than 50 years.”

The family – like many hospitality businesses – have faced continued challenges over the course of the last two years because of the pandemic.
