‘Innovation is The Core of Everything I do’

A Visionary, Serial Entrepreneur and Marketing Leader, Marcus Slater says, “Innovation is the core of everything I do. The marketing industry has evolved so much since the days of vintage billboards. This creates for me a hustle of sales fueled by data and numbers. And technology gives an edge to the company.”

Why Marketing?

“The marketing industry really allows you to understand why people do what they do. I love the aspect of how data allows us to read people and use that knowledge to further a company’s success. This knowledge has helped companies bring clarity to their marketing strategy and technology execution while infusing record-setting multi-million year-over-year growth for brands of all sizes.”

Key Characteristics to Become an Entrepreneur

“My mother always tells my wife that from childhood, I was a boy with an agenda. I came to her daily with something I wanted to do, how it would work, and always a convincing plan of why she should let me do it. I’m always thinking 10 steps ahead.”

A man who loves the hustle, lives for a challenge with an unstoppable entrepreneurial mindset

“When I was 2 years old, I took my dog, and I walked out of the house, attempting to head down the road on my own. I never really understood what my mom meant by this until I had my own daughter and now see exactly what she meant. My daughter is just like me. Fiercely independent, always thinking, always planning her next move, and never becoming complacent.”

“These characteristics have made me the serial entrepreneur and businessman that I am today. Combine these characteristics with the unwavering work ethic I learned from watching my parents work multiple jobs to feed four children, and you get me.”

At the age of 17, Marcus had a strong love, passion, and natural ability as a musician. This passion led him to make a big move to Nashville to pursue music.

“When my wife met me, I was making $20 a show, but I learned how to make extra money by designing websites and merchandise, driving the bus, being a personal assistant to the artists, being the lighting director, and editing videos. This is where my entrepreneurial mindset of no limitations really formed.”

Marcus independently adopts his position as chief of marketing and technology at Deka lash. “My drive to be an entrepreneur comes from inspiring generations to exceed the status quo. You can change and evolve what everyone expects of you. Innovating the marketing industry in itself is what I strive for,” said Marcus.

Working Style – Early Riser

“I learned to be an early riser from my father, who has gotten up at 4:00 AM as far back as I can remember to read his bible. I get up early to have some quiet time and workout – it’s essential and sets the tone for my day, so I prioritize that at the top of the list to get that done early.”

“Before having children, I often worked up to 14-16 hours a day; however, after having my little girl, my workday has shifted. I work from about 7-5 with a lunch break with my wife and daughter. My wife and I on the norm, try to unplug during the evening hours to focus our full attention on family.”

Biggest Motivation

“Growth motivates me. I always want more and I love the chase. My greatest learning tools is learning from others.”

“Starting with my parents and trickling through my whole life I have been blessed with a multitude of mentors through my career from artists I have worked with to entrepreneurs that I have had the ability to learn under.”

“SIMON Sinek inpires me the most, understanding my WHY has been crucial to my personal and professional growth. I had the opportunity to hear him speak in person, and I was more inspired in that session than in my entire business career.”

‘Family First is The Key’

“I have evolved as a husband and father tremendously in the last 5 years. My first years of marriage were filled with long days and constant ideas requiring risk that made my wife feel overwhelmed. I have learned the power of stability in a marriage, and that not all risk is worth the reward. After having my daughter, I have learned family first is the key. I am thankful to work alongside a team and colleagues that value family and encourages me to be a husband and father first.”

‘Stay Calm under Stress and Pressure’

“I do my best work when my back is against the wall and things are down to the wire. My faith along with the power of prayer allows me the confidence that everything happens for a reason and I am not in control, as much as I’d like to be.”

Building a Successful Customer Base

“It starts with understanding your customer base. Who they are, what they do daily, where they invest their attention. People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. And what you do simply proves what you believe. When you understand this – building a successful customer base becomes much more attainable.”

Establishing a Strong Company Culture

“Company culture is a powerful thing when people work with each other, for each other and not for themselves. It is one of the shining facets of Deka Lash.”

I think the best entrepreneurs have a love not only to lead but to learn, and that’s what has made me successful

Formula to Become a Successful Entrepreneur

“Grit, hustle, fearlessness, a love for the chase, a desire to learn, and the ability to fail without losing. I’m a firm believer that your biggest obstacle in life, no matter where you come from, will always be you. You have to see failure as the beginning and the middle, but never entertain it as an end.”

Biggest Failure

“While owning a small business, my wife and I decided we would expand our customer base by offering a local marketing campaign. It did so well. Mind-blowing well. I proceeded with a national campaign. I learned very quickly the power of bandwidth. I took something that was incredibly successful and turned it into a failure by biting off more than I could chew. This was my hardest lesson and my biggest embarrassment. Lessons inspire growth and this situation taught me so much. In a weird way, I’m thankful for it. It made me better.”

 Future Goals

“Honestly I don’t like to think too far in the future. I don’t like putting limits on myself. I always aspire to grow. I have goals to be an amazing husband and father as well as continue to climb the entrepreneurial ladder as high as it will take me,” evinced Marcus.

According to Marcus, entrepreneurs have to invest their time in the Workshops, networking and think tanks to get ahead of the crowd.
